Robotic Knee Replacement in Singapore

What Is Robotic Knee Replacement ?

Robotic Knee Replacement is an advancement in orthopaedic surgery that combines the skill of a surgeon with the precision of robotic technology. In this procedure, a robotic system assists the surgeon in planning and performing a knee replacement. Using 3D imaging, the robot maps the patient’s unique knee anatomy and helps guide the surgeon in removing damaged bone and cartilage with high accuracy.

Despite the term “robotic,” the robot doesn’t perform the surgery- the surgeon remains fully in control throughout the operation.

There are robotic joint replacement systems/ machines in place in most major hospitals in Singapore including VELYS (Depuy), MAKO (Stryker), CORI (Smith & Nephew) and ROSA (Zimmer). Dr Chua is accredited in all the above systems.

How Does Robotic-assisted Knee Surgery Help?

Robotic-assisted surgery allows for more precise placement and alignment of the knee implant compared to traditional methods. This precision may lead to better balance and movement of the knee. The technology also allows surgeons to tailor the procedure to the individual patient.

What Are The Downsides To Robotic Knee Replacement ?

Robotic knee replacement can take slightly longer to perform and often costs more than conventional surgery due to the advanced equipment involved. There may be a need for specialised CT scans and X rays pre op for surgical planning. The surgical incisions for robotic knee cases are also usually larger as there is need to apply bone markers during the course of the surgery.

Generally, robotic knee replacement is most beneficial for patients with complex knee structures, prior deformities, or when high precision is needed for optimal implant alignment.

Patients may not see a major difference in outcome compared to traditional methods, especially if their anatomy is straightforward.

When Does Dr Chua Weiliang Use Robotic Knee Replacement?

Due to its higher cost and longer operating time, Dr Chua Weiliang uses robotic surgery only for more complicated cases. Most knee replacements will fall into the straightforward category. So it is in the complex cases that the benefit of robotic surgery will be more apparent.
