Knee Replacement Surgery
膝关节置换手术

the journey

Knee Osteoarthritis. Bow legs

Diagnosis

Getting the diagnosis right is the first step.

Symptom is usually pain at the front of the knee, specifically at the inner half of the knee. There may also be bow leggedness in severe cases.

This may be associated with stiffness and swelling at the knee joint.

Surgery should be considered for patients who have severe and chronic symptoms, affecting their daily activities and quality of life.

Pre surgery

Before surgery, you will be informed of the following:

- Benefits of going through the surgery- significant permanent pain relief.

- Risks of the surgery (infection, blood clots, injury to important surrounding structures)

- What is done during the surgery.

- How long the recovery period is and what it will involve.

There will be some routine blood and ECG checks to ensure a safe surgery.

Surgery

What is actually done?

The name 'knee replacement' is actually a misnomer. A better term would be 'knee resurfacing'.

The damaged surfaces of the knee are shaved off- about 10mm. And replaced with a metal and plastic implant.

Like changing the rubber tyre on a car wheel.

This would take about 1.5hours to complete.

Post Surgery

After surgery, you will be warded for about 2-3 days. You will be allowed discharge home when you are assessed to be safe to manage at home. Which would mean you are able to walk about with a walking aid for 30-40metres safely,

This would mean you'd be able to get to the kitchen, bedroom and toilet without your home without assistance.

There will be moderate pain, bruising and swelling from the surgery. This will mostly subside within 2 weeks.

Expectations

Full recovery will take 3- 6 months. Motivation and diligence to participate and rehab and physiotherapy is crucial. This is to help you regain your strength and flexibility.

At the end of recovery- your knee symptoms should be significantly improved such that your mobility is improved, and quality of life is improved.
